Report: Building Skills for a Sustainable Future – global potential for 18 million new jobs by 2030

The green transition is more than just clean technology – it’s reshaping the workforce. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), implementing the Paris Agreement could result in a net gain of 18 million jobs globally by 2030.

To seize this opportunity, companies need to rethink their workforce strategies. In Finland, the H2 Cluster has identified 70 key roles essential for developing a competitive hydrogen economy, with a job growth potential of up to 110,000 new positions by 2035.

Wärtsilä offers a real-world example of how companies are responding. The company is investing in both specialist and broad-based skills, running initiatives such as its internal Decarbonization Academy to upskill staff across engineering, customer service, and product development.

As the green economy grows, demand spans technical know-how, regulation expertise, business modelling, and ecosystem integration. Skills that combine deep expertise with wide perspective – so-called T-shaped profiles – are especially valuable.

The green transition is a shared challenge for companies, educators, and policymakers alike. With the right skills in place, it’s also a major opportunity to shape a more sustainable future.
