Collaboration towards accelerating European hydrogen economy progresses – Finland and Germany sign Joint Declaration of Intent on enhancing hydrogen economy collaboration
Hydrogen Cluster Finland welcomes further progress in bilateral relations between Finland and Germany, and the signing of a Joint Declaration of Intent on hydrogen economy collaboration between the two countries, signed by Germany’s Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Katherina Reiche and Minister of Climate and Environment Sari Multala on Wednesday.
The Joint Declaration presents Finland and Germany’s shared vision for cooperation on hydrogen infrastructure, hydrogen technology development, and investments in the sector. The Declaration is a strong signal of the need for cross border collaboration to secure investments in the hydrogen economy. Hydrogen economy value chains are never local – they are always international and therefore benefits of investments are shared across companies, countries and geographies.
“The hydrogen economy is a key tool for Finland’s industrial energy transition and for leveraging the opportunities of the clean transition. Finland targets a 10% share of the EU’s clean hydrogen production and at least an equivalent share in hydrogen end-use applications,” says Minister Sari Multala.
Finland is among the most competitive green and clean hydrogen production locations in the EU. Finland’s primary competitive advantages in the hydrogen economy include an abundant supply of low-cost, clean electricity, significant supply of biogenic CO2 for hydrogen derivative production, and a robust, stable industrial ecosystem.
Moreover, Germany is committed to establishing green and low-carbon hydrogen as the foundation of Germany’s industrial competitiveness and energy resilience in the coming decades. As the largest market for hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives, together with some of the leading hydrogen technology companies, Germany has a significant impact on the development of EU’s hydrogen roadmap.
“This declaration is a great starting point for further industrial collaboration. We look forward to setting up industrial collaboration across the broad value chain covering at least technology, funding, as well as market and infrastructure development. Our goal is to make our two countries the powerhouse of EU’s hydrogen economy, together with partners around the Baltic Sea,” states Mr Herkko Plit, Chair of the Board of Hydrogen Cluster Finland.
With this Declaration, an important step is taken. Hydrogen Cluster Finland would like to thank our respective governments for the commitment to strong efforts to boost hydrogen investments. We would also like to thank our partners, such as the Finnish German Chamber of Commerce, for strong support for bilateral collaboration.
“This collaboration should be our common playbook to ensure that Finland and Germany are jointly at the forefront of development as EU’s industrial future, competitiveness and industrial resilience are being developed,” concludes Mr Plit.
