Poland’s and Finland’s hydrogen clusters forge alliance to boost Baltic energy independence
Poland and Finland both play critically important role in developing strong EU hydrogen economy. While Finland is one of the most competitive production sites for green and low carbon hydrogen and especially hydrogen derivatives such as eFuels, Poland possesses significant demand potential in the various critical industries, and a broad range of technological know-how and expertise. In addition, Poland plays key role in the developing broader Baltic Sea regional market by having sizeable geological storage potential.
In a significant move to bolster European energy independence, Hydrogen Cluster Finland and Poland’s key Hydrogen Cluster Lower Silesian Hydrogen Valley Association (LSHVA) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding to accelerate the creation of an integrated hydrogen market in the Baltic Sea region. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed at the leading Polish hydrogen conference, H2 Poland, taking place in Poznań.
The parties agree to cooperate in advancing a sustainable and safe green and low carbon hydrogen economy through knowledge exchange, ecosystem building, and mutual promotion of innovation and industry development. In addition to its regional role in one of the key hydrogen hubs of Poland, LSHVA will serve as national coordination platform for Finnish-Polish hydrogen interests.
Hydrogen Cluster Finland recognizes that success of securing investments in hydrogen sector requires intensive collaboration especially with our partners in the Baltic Sea region and the European Union. Therefore, the Hydrogen Cluster Finland is excited to partner with Polish LSHVA to intensify commitment and collaboration.
The memorandum was signed on behalf of Hydrogen Cluster Finland by Mr Marko Janhunen, member of the board of directors of Hydrogen Cluster Finland, who stated: “Poland plays a central role in the building of new hydrogen economy value chains. Finnish-Polish collaboration can be truly mutually benefitting – and today more important than ever. Global crises illustrate the need to rapidly increase our energy independence and economic resilience from global shocks.”
The motto of Hydrogen Cluster Finland is “Hydrogen is freedom.” “This message is today relevant more than ever. Therefore, with our partners we must strive to rapidly increase our energy independence, economic and societal resilience, and to confirm significant investments to secure the long-term competitiveness of our industries,” concludes Marko Janhunen.
This partnership builds on the ongoing cooperation within the BalticSeaH2 cross‑border Hydrogen Valley, where Finland, Poland and other Baltic Sea partners work together to create Europe’s first large‑scale integrated hydrogen market. The project accelerates interconnected infrastructure planning, strengthens regional value chains and supports coordinated investment across the Baltic Sea region.
