Finnish Steel and Metal Producers ry
The members of the Finnish Steel and Metal Producers association have several ongoing R&D-projects to support their multimillion investment plans to transform the metal reduction (production) processes non-carbon based. Hydrogen is one of the most potential reduction agent to replace carbon, and in many cases the production of hydrogen is most beneficially done on-site.
The most significant CO2-emission reduction in steel and metal production can be achieved by substituting fossil coal with hydrogen, and hence render the metal reduction process totally CO”-free. In addition to replacing the fossil coal with hydrogen in the reduction process, hydrogen can be also used to substitute other fossil energy sources like natural gas in the metal heat treatment processes and subsequently transforming the full production CO2-free.
