Clean hydrogen provides several interesting opportunities for UPMWe have an in-house access to renewable and CO2-free electricity, water resources, biogenic CO2, and hands-on experience with hydrogen at our advanced biofuels biorefinery in Lappeenranta, Finland, and in the wood-based biochemicals biorefinery under construction in Leuna, Germany.

Currently UPM moves forward with biofuels growth plans and conducts basic engineering phase of a next generation biorefinery with planned annual capacity of 500 000 tonnes of high-quality renewable fuels including sustainable aviation fuel.  The technology concept includes the use of green hydrogen in the production process and location would be either Kotka, Finland, or Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

UPM Energy, the second largest electricity producer in Finland, is a business unit of the UPM Group. We focus on zero-carbon electricity generation and industrial energy optimisation services to excel in the energy transition. With our long and in-depth expertise in energy optimisation, energy trading, industrial processes, and change management we enable new business opportunities in the emerging hydrogen economy.

Our specific knowhow and resources will enable UPM to develop possible new business opportunities in the emerging hydrogen economy.
