Wärtsilä’s research draws on deep experience gained through decades of developing engines as well as supply and storage systems for a wide range of fuels. Wärtsilä has a strong understanding of hydrogen, and gas engines can already use fuel blends of hydrogen in methane, further highlighting the flexibility of our engines. Development will continue throughout the coming years, aimed at defining the most feasible internal combustion engine-based solutions for Energy and Marine applications, enabling the transition to a decarbonized future with green fuels. For the energy market Wärtsilä expects to have an engine and plant concept for pure hydrogen operation ready by 2025.
